One of the most unique downtown planning projects in Gardiner (maybe even in the State!) is about to kick off this Thursday. The City is launching another one of its "bundled (planning) projects" and is seeking public participation for the Downtown Buildings Upper Floor Access Improvement project. Improving access will provide a huge economic boost to downtown by creating more uses in currently underutilized upper floor areas. Examples of how to make such improvements include the installation of a shared elevator system at particular locations.
While this project is still very much in the planning stages, it is a great "private/public partnership" project that could ultimately be implemented with the proper combination of funding in the future. The planning process, and the public's involvement, will be key to how this project develops from here.
In 2003, the City conducted a study (click here) that targeted several sites along Water Street for possible improvements. The City has kept this "on the list" of goals since then and recent excitement generated over Gardiner Main Street's business visitation survey helped rekindle the idea. With the current waterfront planning process underway, and many other planning projects, this is a great opportunity to view how to include as a part of an overall plan for Gardiner's future.
