Gardiner Receives Preserve America Grant
Gardiner, ME, September 26, 2008 — Discovering Gardiner’s historic downtown has just got a whole lot easier and exciting! Congressman Tom Allen’s office and the National Parks Service recently notified Gardiner that the city will receive a $50,000 Preserve America grant this year. This past June, the City applied for the grant to help boost the local economy through promoting some the community’s unique cultural and historic assets. Grant funds will assist Gardiner market its historic and cultural sites, including downtown and surrounding sites, through the installation of signage and development and implementation of a marketing plan.
A major element of the grant will help fund new signage, both wayfinding and interpretive, that will connect the downtown to the waterfront and increase and enhance visitation to the downtown and surrounding historic sites. Wayfinding signage will play a large role in helping visitors navigate the streets to find key destination areas, as they travel through the city. New interpretive signage will include the installation of “Museum in the Street” type signs, as well as other kiosks. New signage will promote the role of the Kennebec River and the impact it had on the community’s history, as well as other areas.
The Preserve America project will involve many community partners, including Gardiner Main Street, Johnson Hall, Gardiner Public Library and the Maine Historic Preservation Commission.
The Preserve America project will tie in several community master planning efforts that include downtown revitalization, waterfront, and citywide signage master plans. The timing of the grant announcement allows the City to pursue a comprehensive approach to waterfront park project, as well as coordinate marketing the Libby Hill Business Park, and finalize the citywide signage plans through implementation.
