Author lecture and book signing
New Book on Gardiner, Maine

The Gardiner Public Library will be hosting a local author lecture and book signing event on Saturday, December 13th from 10:30-12:30. Come join authors Earle G. Shettleworth, Jr and Danny D. Smith as the present a slideshow of their new book, Gardiner published by Arcadia Publishing as part of their Postcard History series. This book features many never-before-published postcards from the collections of the Maine Historic Preservation Commission. This fascinating look at our local history depicted through old postcards illustrates Gardiner’s history as it became one of the state’s strongest manufacturing and transportation centers due to its central location on the Kennebec River and the Cobbosseecontee Stream.  After the slideshow, books will be for sale and the authors will be available to sign copies.

Earle G. Shettleworth, Jr. has been the director of the Maine Historic Preservation Commission since 1976 and Maine state historian since 2004. Danny D. Smith is chairman of the Special Collections Committee of the Gardiner Library Association and the editor of an Edwin Arlington Robinson Web site. In 1996, Smith and Shettleworth were coauthors of Gardiner on the Kennebec, a publication of Arcadia’s Images of America series.

Proceeds from the sale of the book will be used to help defray costs from the recent restoration of the library’s Children’s Room.  Books will remain on sale at the library while they last.  For more information call 207-582-3312.  This event is free and open to the public.
