GRANT AWARD ANNOUNCED
The Gardiner Public Library is pleased to announce that the Gardiner Library Association is a recipient of a successful grant application from the Stephen and Tabitha King Foundation. The $50,000 award will go to the 3-phased restoration project that includes renovating the main floor of the library and extending our heating and ventilation system to the main floor. We also hope to remove a dropped ceiling to expose a gorgeous vaulted ceiling, upgrade the lighting, and replace the rugs and the book stacks. Our final stage includes plans to address air-quality and space issues in our Community Archives Room that is the repository of much of our local history. Our phase 1 plan was completed last June when we re-opened our newly restored Children’s Room. This project earned the library an Honorary Award
for Excellence in Restoration from Maine Preservation.
The Gardiner Library Association is a non-profit agency that owns and maintains the historic Gardiner Public Library building. The 128-year-old structure continues to be one of the busiest libraries in Maine and serves the towns of Litchfield, Pittston, Randolph, West Gardiner as well as the City of Gardiner.
The total estimate to complete the final phases of the library project is $250,000 and we will continue to seek donations for the project until it is completed. Any donations made to the Gardiner Library Association are tax deductible and certainly welcomed! Please call 582-3312 for further information.
The members of the Gardiner Library Association, the staff of the Gardiner library, and the residents in our library community wholeheartedly thank the Stephen and Tabitha King Foundation. In 1998, the Gardiner Library Association was also the recipient of Stephen and Tabitha King Foundation. This grant helped us to replace our roof and begin some interior restorations. We are so grateful for all the support this organization gives to public libraries across Maine.
