Property Tax Clubs
The City of Gardiner, Maine announces a new initiative that will allow Gardiner residents to pay for their taxes on a monthly basis. Anne Davis, Interim City Manager, reports that Gardiner City Council approved this idea at their council meeting of 7-15-09. “Some residents have requested that they be able to pay their taxes on a monthly basis rather than in 2 lump sums. They feel that it would fit better into their monthly budget if they can pay over a 9 month plan,” states Davis. Davis also feels that this will be good for the City of Gardiner in that it will present a revenue flow over 9 months if enough residents participate in the program.
The process is quite simple. The club begins September 1, 2009 and must be completed by May 1, 2010 with no tax club coupons being issued after September 1st. All previous account balances must be paid in full and interest will not accrue as long as the account is paid monthly and on time. Failure to make a monthly payment will result in the removal from the tax club and interest will be charged on the balance due. At this point, property taxes in escrow are excluded from the club.
If residents are interested in this new alternative, please call Gardiner Tax Collector, Kim Dalton, at 207-582-2223 during regular office hours or contact taxcollector@gardinermaine.com. Please remember that the deadline to join this exciting initiative is September 1, 2009.
