Gardiner Public Library
The Gardiner Library Association began the restoration of the library in mid-September. They have been able to do most of the work without the necessity of closing the library. In order to keep both the staff and visitors safe, during the next phase of work, the library will be closed on Monday, October 26, 2009 through Sunday, November 1, 2009. Plans are to re-open to the public on Monday, November 2nd.
According to Anne Davis, director of the library and current Interim City Manager, the architect and structural engineer for the project suggested closure when they determined that the contractors will have to install a steel beam to address a building issue recently discovered during the work. Davis went on to explain that after more than 128 years, the original structure is in surprisingly good condition. There is one weight-bearing beam that needs to be strengthened in order to ensure the stability of a portion of the wall. A similar issue was discovered during the restoration of the Children’s Room last year. Davis says, “We are disappointed to have to close for a week as we are a very busy library. The safety of our community is paramount during the restoration, so I am forced
to shut down during this phase. I hope all our patrons will continue to be as patient as they have been and understand the necessity. Any registered member of the Gardiner Public Library may use both the Lithgow Library in Augusta as well as the Waterville Public Library. The final outcome will make these inconveniences all worthwhile as the interior that has started to emerge is spectacular!” Davis also wishes to remind our community that the Gardiner Library Association will welcome any donations to help defray these additional construction costs.
Please note that any items due during this week of closure will not accrue fines. The drop boxes outside the building will remain accessible. If you have any questions regarding the library, please call 582-3312.
