Over the last week we have had favorable weather that has eroded the ice jam considerably. The channel on the river is almost open. The Army Corp. of Engineers and the U.S.G.S. did test drilling yesterday and found the ice to be significantly deteriorating do to warmer water flowing underneath. Ice monitoring devices were positioned on the river. South of the bridge the ice down to Richmond is also getting very week with large areas of open water. Depending on this week's precipitation type and amount, we could still have some problems although greatly reduced from two weeks ago. The river banks still hold a great deal of ice and if were to go all at once, it could still cause problems if not able to flow freely pass South Gardiner. Everyone still needs to remember that spring isn’t here yet and flooding is still a concern.
