FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
THE GARDINER PUBLIC LIBRARY
BEGINS RESTORATION OF THE STAGE CURTAIN
Gardiner- During the restoration of our Children’s Room, the contractors discovered a stage curtain tucked up above the ceiling. After some close inspection, library staff determined that the curtain was probably over 100-years-old and in fairly good condition. For more than a year, this exquisite artifact was stored in the library waiting for restoration.
A benefactor of the library made an anonymous donation to the Gardiner Library Association so that the restoration could be done. Anne Davis, Director of Library and Information Services, announced that the restoration will begin Tuesday, June 1st and will continue through the week. The Gardiner Library Association has hired Christine Hadsel, Project Director with Curtains Without Borders located in Burlington Vermont to do the work. Ms. Hadsel, her staff, library staff and volunteers will unfurl the curtain, clean it, repair it and hang it above the stage area of the library.
The work will be done right in the Children’s Room and the project will be opened to the public so the community can come and watch this very specialized restoration. The work will last 3 days and the curtain will be hung on Friday. According to Davis, “this is the greater Gardiner community’s stage curtain and I am so excited that they can come and watch the process. I hope kids will come and see what is being done and understand that the library contains many wonderful and unique items. It is truly our community center.”
The restoration of the curtain will complete Phase 2 of the Gardiner Library Association’s renovation plans. Last year, they completed the Children’s Room renovations, this year the main floor was renovated and next year plans are in place to rehabilitate the Community Archives Room. The Gardiner Library Association owns the library building and grounds. All the renovations have been done with grant money and very generous contributions from the community. No local tax dollars were used in these restorations. Please plan on celebrating the library restoration by attending the open house on Wednesday, June 30th from 5PM-8PM. The stage curtain will be dropped so everyone can see the gorgeous restoration. For more information about the library please
