Gardiner’s Waterfront is Open for Business this Winter

Gardiner, ME, December 22, 2010 Gardiner’s new and improved downtown waterfront park has plenty of exciting new features to offer visitors this winter.  Earlier this summer, the city began constructing phase II of the waterfront park.  The city reached substantial completion for this million dollar phase of construction in late summer, and minor work continued throughout the fall.  Fortunately, the public does not have to wait until next spring to start enjoying the redeveloped waterfront park.  New features, ready for public use today, include increased parking areas, lighting throughout the entire park, and (starting soon) a natural ice skating area.

Winter Waterfront Park Destination
Park visitors will be able to test their ice skates out on an 8,000-10,000 square foot natural ice skating area located in the center of the waterfront, as soon as weather conditions permit.  The Gardiner Fire Department has offered to help flood the area and form the ice when the ground is ready.  The city will “learn as things go” during the waterfront skating area’s first season but it should be a fun place for outdoor ice skating for everyone.

The skating area is just one part of a waterfront redevelopment project that has many other new and exciting features.  Although there is a tremendous amount of new greenspace to for visitors to enjoy, the city has also significantly increased parking.  There are now 56 passenger vehicle spaces and 21 vehicle/trailer spaces for a total of 77 spaces.  Previously, the park had 40 passenger and 10 vehicle/trailer spaces on the paved parking lot.  With increased parking, there is greater access for waterfront visitors as well as businesses along Water Street.  The new parking area is open and being maintained by the City.
