Reading Program at the Library
On January 1st, we started a program called A Year of Reading. Anyone and everyone – of any age – with a valid Gardiner Public Library card is eligible to join. Each month we will have a different reading theme that will be sponsored by a local area business. Read a book or watch a movie pertaining to that theme and be entered for a prize drawing at the end of the month. Come in and join the fun!
The theme for September is Education Month and our monthly drawing is sponsored by Gardiner Family Chiropractic located at 90 Main Avenue in Gardiner. You just need to explore an item that has something to do with/involving/about or pertaining to….education! Please register at the library’s adult circulation desk. Staff will gladly help you make your title selection if needed.
For an extra chance to win in the drawing, we encourage you to read a banned book. This is the 30th anniversary of Banned Book Week (9/30/12 through 10/6/12). Banned Books Week was launched in 1982 in response to a sudden surge in the number of challenges to books in schools, bookstores and libraries. More than 11,300 books have been challenged since 1982. According to the American Library Association, there were 326 challenges reported to the Office of Intellectual Freedom in 2011, and many more go unreported. The library will have a list of titles that have been challenged and we hope everyone will stop in to look at this list. Many titles will surprise you!
The Gardiner Public Library is located at 152 Water Street, Gardiner, Maine. We can be reached at 207-582-3312. This program is free and open to everyone with a Gardiner library card.
