In 1980 Maine resident, Mark Hathaway, was a graduate student at Northwestern University in Chicago when he came down with viral encephalitis. This disease would change his life forever when it spiraled him into a six-week coma and then into six weeks living with “Locked–in Syndrome”. During this time his mind was active, he could hear and see things around him but he couldn’t communicate.
