Gardiner Selling Backyard Compost Bins & Kitchen Waste Pails for Earth Day 2015
Tired of seeing all those kitchen leftovers from preparing meals and snacks get thrown out in the trash or eaten by critters in your makeshift composting bin the backyard? Here is your chance to turn those scraps into a rich soil amendment.
As part of Earth Day 2015 celebrations, Gardiner is participating in a statewide backyard composting equipment sale. Through May 2, 2015, a home compost bin and how-to guide with a combined retail value of $100 may be purchased for only $48 (tax included). The bin is black, has a 10-year warranty and is made of 100% recycled plastic. It is approximately 35” high and 33” wide, or large enough for a family of five.
The two-gallon Sure-Close kitchen scrap pail is also available for sale at $8. The vented lid deters odors and fruit flies. The city is also offering the Wingdigger compost turner for $18 and a 20-inch thermometer for checking the inside temperature of your compost bin for $20.
The Systern 55-gallon rain barrel for watering the garden and keeping the material in your compost bin moist is also for sale, at a reduced price of $65.
Printed order forms are available at City Hall, at various places around town, and on the City’s website at GardinerMaine.com (there is a link to the form under “Where Do I Go For?”). Orders may also be placed online in the City’s online “store”. Click on “Online Payments” on the website, then click on “Gardiner Store”. You will be charged a small credit card transaction fee.
