GARDINER DOWNTOWN BUSINESSES AND RESIDENTS
As you may have noticed recently, there has been construction activity gearing up next to the boat launch/waterfront park. The City is finishing up its long term sewer rehab and system upgrade plan to comply with State and Federal regulations requiring the capture and treatment of wet weather rainwater/sewage discharge and overflows (CSO’s) to the Kennebec River. This entails the construction of a large 400,000 gallon concrete storage and treatment structure next to the Maine Avenue Pump Station (the large concrete building on the hill overlooking the boat launch). When completed, this structure will be underground out of sight and the site restored to normal. The general contractor is Sargent Corp. of Stillwater, Maine.
As with all construction projects, there will be some activities from time to time that may inconvenience you such as equipment noise, back-up beepers, truck traffic and minor traffic delays. All attempts will be made to reduce these to minimum levels. On a plus side, there may be as much as 40 workers on site at any one time that will be exploring Gardiner’s diverse businesses and making purchases.
The first major step will be the driving of sheet piles into the ground to stabilize the large underground hole that will need to be excavated next to the river. This is scheduled to begin on Thursday, December 3, 2015 and will continue into the week of December 7, 2015. You may experience slight vibration and “thumping” noises when each sheet is driven. Next, excavation of the hole will begin by the end of the week of December 7. There will be several trips through downtown of 10 wheel dump trucks as fill is removed. Construction will then be phased in different time schedules throughout the winter and spring of 2016. Come summer, complete access to the boat launch ramps, floats, docks and access road in the waterfront park will be maintained. Substantial completion of the project is
scheduled for September 2016. And the site restored to normal by November 2016.
