Dear Gardiner Residents:
This morning I discovered a discrepancy in the totals for the write-in votes on the Municipal Ballot for the November 8, 2016 Election. During the count on Election Night there were six tally sheets that were not turned in to the City Clerk to be added into the official account. After reviewing the error I have attached a complete report of all votes cast that were counted by the ballot machine and those that were hand counted last night. I want to clarify that this was a human error and that the Election Clerks and I take great responsibility in the work that we do during the Elections, and that only the results of the School Board were affected by this error. It was an incredibly busy day and evening with the election clerks working into the early morning hours hand counting 3,005 State of Maine Judge of
Probate Ballots and the 348 municipal write-in votes. I want to reassure City residents that all ballots were secured in the vault at City Hall and there was no chance for voter fraud. I also want to apologize to Louis Sigel who was originally the winner for the School Board write-in votes; after reviewing the error it clearly showed that Katherine Chadwick had received the most write-in votes. Again I apologize for any concern this error may have caused.
