Harold Warren Construction of Chelsea was awarded the contract for reconstruction of the Arcade Parking Lot.
Construction began on Thursday, July 11th, 2002. Final paving was put "on hold" in late fall 2002 to allow for the relocation of overhead utility lines underground.
Improvements include reconfiguration of the parking area, addition of granite curbing, improvements to the Arcade entrance, new pedestrian riverwalk and sidewalks, installation of period streetlights, removal of redundant overhead wires, and general aesthetic improvements.
Curious why the Arcade Parking Lot is called "the arcade," even though there are no video games in sight? According to Webster's Dictionary, the word "arcade" means "any covered passageway, especially one with shops along the sides."
