Home is the place where we want to feel safe and secure.
Use a door viewer before opening your door. Always demand identification from strangers (even repair or sales persons).
Always lock up your home before leaving.
Have keys ready and in your hand.
Don't hide your house keys outdoors anywhere.
Use interior and exterior lighting at all times.
When residents go out for the evening, they usually leave on their "burglar beacon." A burglar beacon is a small light that is left on so they don't walk into a dark house when they come home. These are lights like the one above the kitchen or stove, the hallway light, or a light in the corner of the living room. Unfortunately these lights are a signal for the criminal that no one is home. If you go out for an evening, leave a radio and several lights on. When you go on vacation put at least two lights, in different parts of the house, and a radio on timers. Regardless of whether you are on vacation, or just gone for the evening, from the outside of your house it should look as if someone is home.
