WEEKLY MEMORANDUM

TO:             Mayor MacLean, Members of the City Council, and Department Heads
FROM:     Scott Morelli, City Manager
DATE:     January 7, 2011
RE:             Weekly Memo

UPCOMING MEETINGS
Next week's meeting agenda
Next Week's City Meetings are available on our Calendar

Below please find an update on recent City activities:

  • The City of Gardiner will host an inauguration for new City Councilor Scott Williams next Wednesday, January 12, 2011 at 7 p.m. in the Council Room.
  • The City lost the transmission in its Buildings & Grounds 2004 Chevy One Ton truck recently.  We have opted to replace the transmission with one that comes with a three year warranty at a cost of just under $4,000. The vehicle has about 21,000 “hard” miles on it and is used primarily to plow snow at municipal venues, including the waterfront, as well as towing equipment such as our tractor.
  • The City of Gardiner will soon be accepting credit card payments for a variety of items.  Currently, we only accept debit cards, cash, or check.  By utilizing the State of Maine’s PayPort system, residents will be able to pay their bills in person via credit card, subject to a small convenience charge that PayPort will impose to cover the cost of the transaction.  This is one of several ongoing efforts to help offer residents more options and improve our customer service.  Eventually, the PayPort system will be able to accept payments online, adding to the convenience of this service.
  • The Historic Preservation Commission has created a flyer to help promote the City’s sale of the historic property on 18 Dennis Street.  The City will be hosting an open house at this site on Friday, January 14 at 10 a.m. (snow date Tues, January 18).  Proposals are due March 1, 2011.
  • The Community Archives Room of the Gardiner Public Library will host Unpuzzle Your Past, a free course designed for those with little or no experience in genealogy. ~Participants will learn about tools and techniques they can use to confidently begin research on their family history. ~This course is divided into 4 classes and will be taught on Tuesdays from 2 to 4 p.m. starting on January 18 and running through February 8. ~Unpuzzle Your Past will be presented by GariLu Weeks. ~Ms. Weeks has worked in the Community Archives Room doing genealogy and archival preservation for over 10 years. ~The course is free but registration is required. ~To register, please call 582-3312.
As always, I appreciate the opportunity to serve the people of Gardiner as City Manager.
