UPCOMING MEETINGS
Next Week's City Meetings are available on our Calendar
This past Wednesday, Gardiner City Council signed a contract with Scott Morelli to be the new Gardiner City Manager. Mr. Morelli will begin his tenure with the city on Monday, March 8th. Though the economy is tough right now, Scott Morelli is coming to our community at a time when some great things are about to happen.
Our Gardiner Main Street organization is thriving under the tutelage of a very dedicated board and volunteers. This organization will be introducing their new executive director a month after Scott’s arrival. Christopher West is moving from Mackinac Island in Michigan and brings quite a resume of experience running a non-profit organization and protecting historic buildings by making them tourist destinations.
Gardiner City Council looked at the traditional way we heat public buildings and made a commitment to alternative energy by installing a wood pellet boiler in our Public Works Garage. The second phase of our waterfront project should begin next summer as we all hold our breath and hope for a slow melt of the Kennebec River. We have plans to work on the infrastructure in and around Harrison Avenue and we are working with Maine’s Department of Transportation to create beautiful public trails along the Cobbossee corridor. It will be an exciting time to be the City Manager for Gardiner.
Scott Morelli comes to Gardiner after working in Framingham, MA. Since July 2005, Morelli has served as the Executive Assistant to the Town Manager in Framingham, Mass. (pop. 68,000). In this capacity Morelli oversaw and helped prepare $2+ million worth of departmental budgets, served as a member of the town’s collective bargaining team, oversaw the property and casualty insurance for the town, and supervised Selectmen/Town Manager office staff. He lives in New Gloucester, Maine with his wife, Elizabeth, and their two daughters, Olivia and Isabelle. He completed his undergraduate work at the University of Maine, receiving a B.A. in Public Management and a minor in Political Science. He received a Master’s of Public Administration (MPA) degree from the Maxwell School of Citizenship and
Public Affairs at Syracuse University, where he was also honored as the university’s graduate student leader of the year in 2005.
Our Gardiner City Council took their time in the hiring process because they were looking for an individual who would come to our city with fresh ideas but who had enough respect for the professional staff currently employed. He will be the manager of a group of professional firefighters/EMTs and police officers that serve and protect our city 24 hours a day. Our library and city hall staff cheerfully and professionally deal with our community residents so that he will receive little or no criticisms over how the city is run. Mr. Morelli will oversee a hardworking PW and Building and Grounds crew with some more winter storms to come and a treatment plant that is a true regional service. Gardiner is a great city and I hope everyone will take the time to welcome Scott Morelli!
