CITY MANAGER’S OFFICE
WEEKLY MEMORANDUM

TO:        Mayor MacLean, Members of the City Council, and Department Heads
FROM:  Scott Morelli, City Manager
DATE:   February 18, 2011
RE:        Weekly Memo

Next Week's City Meetings are available on our Calendar

Below please find an update on recent City activities:

  • Attached please find the City’s January financial statements
  • Congratulations to Chuck Applebee, Director of Wastewater and Public Works, who recently received the Alfred E. Peloquin Award from the New England Water Environment Association (NEWEA).  Since 1990 this award has been given to “an individual who has shown a high level of interest and performance in wastewater operations … and who has made a significant contribution to the wastewater field in such areas as improvements to the environment, cost effective plant operations, public relations, innovative process controls, industrial pretreatment, training, Association contributions, and related activities.”  Chuck received his award last month at NEWEA’s annual meeting in Boston (see photo below)
  • The City recently utilized members of the Work Release program to clear snow and ice from the roof of City Hall.  We have also had them clear snow from the South Gardiner Fire Station and portions of the Wastewater Treatment Plant
  • As I indicated at our meeting this week, the Governor’s proposed budget would result in a $27,000 increase in local aid to Gardiner over what we received in FY11.  This good news is tempered by the fact that, if the law for revenue sharing were followed, we should actually be receiving $338,000 more from the State.  As for the School Department, the early estimates show that RSU 11 will receive $233,000 less in State funding next fiscal year (not including ARRA SFSF funds).
  • A reminder that City Hall will be closed on Monday, February 21, 2011 in observance of Presidents’ Day
As always, I appreciate the opportunity to serve the people of Gardiner as City Manager.
