CITY MANAGER’S OFFICE
WEEKLY MEMORANDUM

TO:     Mayor MacLean, Members of the City Council and Department Heads
FROM:   Scott Morelli, City Manager
DATE:   May 7, 2010
RE:     Weekly Memo

UPCOMING MEETINGS
Next week's meeting agenda
Next Week's City Meetings are available on our Calendar

Below please find an update on recent City activities:

  • As you know, the Council recently approved splitting the costs of an upcoming event with Gardiner Main Street on the Friday of Memorial Day weekend. The May 28th event will include a motorcycle parade, pizza tasting concert, and a fireworks show. I would like to thank Steven Marson, President of Central Maine Pyrotechnics, for donating this “free” show to the City. Mr. Marson will be training his staff and this will serve as an opportunity for residents to enjoy a free show that will feature at least twice as many fireworks as a typical Fourth of July show. Overall, this will be a great event for Gardiner residents and will also help showcase the terrific merchants we have in this City.
  • As noted last week, the City has fronted the cost for 20 compost bins. The City was able to purchase these at the reduced rate of $38.50 each (normally $100) and we will then pass along these savings to our citizens. Anyone interested in purchasing one of these bins can bring payment in to City Hall during normal business hours. For more information, please check out the flyer on the City’s website.
  • Next Saturday, May 15 the City of Gardiner will be participating in the Household Hazardous Waste Collection event. Gardiner residents will be able to bring electronic, liquid, and medical waste to different locations for disposal and in most cases the disposal is free of charge.  For more information, please visit our website.
  • Attached to this memo is a quote for repairing the fender piles that were damaged this winter along the waterfront. Unfortunately, we did not qualify for FEMA funds to do these repairs, so it is a cost that the City will need to absorb. Planning Director Jason Simcock will be in later this month to further discuss options with the Council.
  • Most of the City staff has received training on sexual harassment by our sexual harassment officer, Anne Davis.  All employees were also given the City’s policy with this week’s paycheck.  The handful who were unable to attend the mandatory training will attend a make-up workshop soon.
  • The City will soon be purchasing a new server that has triple the capacity of our current, maxed-out server which is nearing the end of its useful life.  We will be using funds originally programmed for a Unifund module upgrade that the City has delayed purchase on until at least FY11 or likely FY12.  This server will help in our efforts to improve the City Hall technology infrastructure. We are also looking at other technology solutions that will improve our internal capabilities as well as the service we can provide to the public.
As always, I appreciate the opportunity to serve the people of Gardiner as City Manager.
