Police

Chief Toman received notice of three grant awards recently. $4900 will support increased operating under the influence enforcement and $4788 will help us step up speed enforcement details. These activities will commence shortly and last until the end of September. A two week grant-supported seatbelt enforcement program starts the last week of May.

More generally activity has been increasing recently, perhaps due to a new “zero tolerance” approach designed to deter criminal activity. Over the past two and a half weeks there have been 35 court summonses or arrests, 383 incidents initiated in our records management system and 92 traffic stops. That is a very busy seventeen or eighteen days!

An Invitation to China

Enclosed in the packet is an invitation Chuck Applebee has received. Chuck has been invited as part of a small delegation to visit China and provide technical expertise in the wastewater field. China has relatively large infrastructure challenges given the historically large population and the current rate economic growth. Invitations went to a select few throughout the country. This is a notable validation of what we already knew locally – Chuck’s commitment to public service and technical expertise are far beyond normal expectations and we are lucky to have a colleague and manager of his capabilities. The turnaround time for this invitation was extremely tight and we were unable to accommodate the logistics, but I have written to the President of the Water Environment Federation explaining the circumstances and nominating Chuck for another future invitation.
