UPCOMING MEETINGS
Next Week's City Meetings are available on our Calendar
Below please find an update on recent City activities:
- A reminder that tomorrow (Saturday, May 15) the City of Gardiner will be participating in the Household Hazardous Waste Collection event. Gardiner residents will be able to bring electronic, liquid, and medical waste to different locations for disposal and in most cases the disposal is free of charge. For more information, please visit our website.
- The 20 compost bins that the City purchased at a reduced rate and resold to citizens at that lower rate have been sold out! The City will work with the Recycling Committee to take advantage of this offer again in 2011, should it be available.
- Congratulations also to Anne Davis and her Library staff who were recently awarded $5,000 from the Maine State Museum with funds from the State of Maine's New Century Community Program. ~The grants provide funds to assist Maine’s non-profit cultural organizations improve facilities that house historically, scientifically, or artistically significant collections. ~In Gardiner, these funds will be used to towards Phase III of the Library renovations. ~This phase will include the restoration of the front entrance and the rehabilitation of the library’s Community Archives Room. ~According to Davis, this is the area that needs the most rehabilitation because it is used to house much of the local history for the lower Kennebec Valley. ~
- The Police Department has received another grant, this time in the amount of $3618.00 from the Edward J. Byrne Justice Assistance Grant (JAG). The JAG grant helps local, state, Federal, tribal and territorial governments improve and enhance law enforcement and the criminal justice system and funding can be used for state and local initiatives, technical assistance, training, personnel, equipment, supplies, contractual support, and criminal justice information systems. Congrats to Chief Jim Toman and his crew for their success in obtaining these funds for the City!
- This week is National Police Week. As part of the week’s events, three members of our Police Department marched in the procession yesterday in Augusta at Maine’s Law Enforcement Memorial Ceremony. The march was in honor of those that have made the ultimate sacrifice, including one of Gardiner’s own: Ralph A. Chase.
- The Conservation Committee would like to acknowledge and thank students in the Environmental Science class at the Gardiner Area High School students who recently helped to pull 827 pounds of garlic mustard from along the riverside here in town. Under the direction of their instructor, Sharon Gallant, they filled 20 contractor bags with this invasive plant during the course of their clean up!
- Public Works remains busy with springtime maintenance, repair culverts, ditching, etc. Work will soon begin on the Harrison Avenue project (early June) and the South Gardiner Pump Station (mid-June).
- Congratulations to Fire Captain David Smith, who recently graduated from the Kennebec Leadership Institute. Capt. Smith was one of 18 citizens who graduated from the institute in 2010. The City of Gardiner is pleased to have worked with Capt. Smith to allow him the time needed to complete the 3+ month course.
As always, I appreciate the opportunity to serve the people of Gardiner as City Manager.
L to R: Fire Chief Rick Cody; Fire Capt. David Smith’s wife, Carol; and Capt. Smith. Capt. Smith graduated this week from the Kennebec Leadership Institute.
