CITY MANAGER’S OFFICE
WEEKLY MEMORANDUM

TO:     Mayor MacLean, Members of the City Council and Department Heads
FROM:   Scott Morelli, City Manager
DATE:   May 21, 2010
RE:     Weekly Memo

UPCOMING MEETINGS

Next Week's City Meetings are available on our Calendar

Below please find an update on recent City activities:

  • A reminder that on Tuesday, May 25 residents will be able to vote on the proposed school budget for MSAD/RSU #11.  The proposed $21,231,480.02 budget represents a $106,041.46 increase over the FY10 budget.  This would result in a $61,197.58 increase from FY10 in the assessment to Gardiner taxpayers, or about an $0.18 increase in the current mil rate.  At this meeting, voters can either approve, increase, or decrease the proposed budget amount.  The budget validation meeting will occur at 7 p.m. at the high school gym.
  • I encourage everyone to attend the “Hogs, Pies, and Fireworks” event this coming Friday, May 28, 2010. The event was coordinated by Gardiner Main Street and the fireworks show is being generously donated by Steve Marson, owner of Central Maine Pyrotechnics, so that he can train his staff.  This will be a great community event and promises to offer some great food as Gardiner vendors vie for your vote for best pizza.  The festivities start at 6 pm and this should be a great way to kick of Memorial Day weekend!
  • The Crematorium Committee is getting closer to presenting their findings to the City Council. The committee met for a fifth time this past Tuesday, and finished their responses to the questions presented to them by the Council. They will tentatively meet on Wednesday, June 9 to adopt the written report that is being drafted based on their responses. Per your request, I am having our Public Works Department obtain revised cost estimates for one-time and on-going expenditures that the City would incur if it were to take over ownership of the cemetery. I will have these numbers prior to the committee presenting you with its findings.
  • The new Land Use Ordinance that was recently adopted by the Council went into effect today.
  • Congratulations to Police Officer Nate McNally, who just today graduated from the Maine Criminal Justice Academy. I had the privilege to attend the graduation ceremony along with Police Chief Jim Toman and several members of the Gardiner Police Department.  Officer McNally and the other 44 members of his academy class began their training on January 19, 2010 and today’s graduation culminates an intense 18 week training program. Officer McNally will return to work on Monday, May 24th and he is assigned to the night shift. He has been an employee with the City since August 2009. Prior to working for the City, Officer McNally was a full-time police dispatcher and part-time patrol deputy for the Androscoggin County Sheriff’s Department.  Again, please join me in congratulating Officer McNally!
  • A reminder that there will not be a Council meeting next week. The next Council meeting will be held on Wednesday, June 2, 2010 and will include a wrap-up discussion about the proposed FY11 budget.
