CITY MANAGER’S OFFICE
WEEKLY MEMORANDUM

TO:             Mayor MacLean, Members of the City Council, and Department Heads
FROM:     Scott Morelli, City Manager
DATE:     June 11, 2010
RE:             Weekly Memo

UPCOMING MEETINGS
Next week's meeting agenda
Next Week's City Meetings are available on our Calendar

Below please find an update on recent City activities:

  • A reminder that tomorrow, Saturday, June 12, is the Gardiner Police Department’s Bike Rodeo event.  The rodeo will be held rain or shine from 9 – 10 a.m. at the Laura E. Richards School on Brunswick Avenue.  This event is for Gardiner kids in grades 2 through 6 and will involve games, bike riding skills, safety tips, free safety inspections, prizes, and more!  For more information please contact Safety Officer Jamie Dacyczyn at 582-5150 or view the flyer on our website.
  • Don’t forget that next Saturday, June 19, is the Greater Gardiner River Festival! Events run all day starting at 7 a.m. and conclude with a fireworks show on the waterfront at night.  For more information, please visit our website.
  • Congratulations to City Clerk Deirdre Berglund and her election workers for running a smooth election on June 8, where 29% of registered voters (1,400) showed up to cast their ballot on a variety of issues.  Turnout was higher than the expected 20%.  You can view the unofficial results on our website.
  • Public Works has been busy putting up gravel for the waterfront project and preparing Green and Walnut streets for paving
  • Both the Harrison Avenue and South Gardiner Pump Station projects are starting up
  • Wastewater CIP and rate work studies are underway.  The City will be scheduling meetings for these matters in July
  • Congratulations to the Fire Department, who recently received a grant from the Maine Municipal Association through their Safety Enhancement Grant and Scholarship program.  The $1,126.67 grant, which includes a 50% City match, will fund a hose roller which will allow the fire crew to load the hose back onto the truck without picking it up. This should eliminate some of the back strains that accompany this type of task.
  • Members of the Gardiner Police Department ran in the Torch Run last Thursday to benefit the Special Olympics of Maine. Gardiner’s leg of the relay started at the Richmond line on Rt. 201 and ended at VIP in Farmingdale. Sgt. Peppard of GPD ran the entire length!
As always, I appreciate the opportunity to serve the people of Gardiner as City Manager.
