CITY MANAGER’S OFFICE
WEEKLY MEMORANDUM
TO: Mayor MacLean, Members of the City Council, and Department Heads
FROM: Scott Morelli, City Manager
DATE: July 16, 2010
RE: Weekly Memo
UPCOMING MEETINGS
Next Week's City Meetings are available on our Calendar
Below please find an update on recent City activities:
- As you know, your agenda for July 28, 2010 has several important issues on it for you to address, including a workshop on the crematorium. In anticipation of a decision being made at this meeting regarding that item, I have asked that the City advertise for a potential ordinance change. This would enable you to change the ordinance back to how it was prior to last year, which would prohibit placement of a crematorium in a high density residential zone. In addition to listing this potential ordinance change on the agenda, we will also list an option to remove the crematorium moratorium. This will enable you to allow the process to site a crematorium in the Oak Grove Cemetery to continue, if that is the direction you choose to go in. Of course, there are several other alternatives or variations of the above options that
you can choose but we at least wanted to be sure that if you wanted to make a decision that night one way or the other that you could legally do so. This was reviewed with our special legal counsel and I personally relayed this information to the applicant as well.
- I am pleased to announce that work is commencing on the modest reorganization plan that was discussed with the Council during the budget process. I would like to thank the general unit union for approving the Memorandum of Agreement with the City to incorporate new duties and additional pay to two different positions and to also replace the Finance Admin. position with the Executive Assistant position. City staff has also been preparing the building for some office relocations, with the goal of having some of the work done prior to August 1 and all of it done by mid-September. As a reminder, this reorganization will save the City between $16,000 - $23,000 per year.
- By now residents have likely received their quarterly sewer bills. Since the last quarterly bill went out about a month late due to software glitches, some residents may feel that the bill they just received is the “catch up” bill that was discussed with the Council a few months ago. This is not the case. We will be discussing the “catch up” sewer billing issue again with the Council in a few months and will also have a discussion with the Wastewater Advisory Board and staff to discuss potential revamps to the current sewer rate calculations.
As always, I appreciate the opportunity to serve the people of Gardiner as City Manager.
