RE: Weekly Memo
UPCOMING MEETINGS
Next Week's City Meetings are available on our Calendar
Below please find an update on recent City activities:
- As I noted in an email to you earlier this week, the “Jacob’s Ladder” staircase that connects Neal and Robinson streets had to be removed by the City because of unsafe conditions. It had been cordoned off from public use for a few months after a visit to the site revealed it was in disrepair. I have confirmed with Code Enforcement Officer David Cichowski that the quotes received to replace the stairway – between $8,000 - $19,000 – were essentially just to replace the existing structure and would not necessarily comply with current stair codes or ADA requirements. To cost to comply would obviously increase the amounts of these quotes. In either case, due to budget constraints the City does not plan on pursuing replacement of this stairway in this fiscal year.
- The City will need to make a serious technology investment soon. One of our public safety server’s has crashed and although that phenomenon apparently is not uncommon, this recent crash is not something that is an easy fix, as it perhaps has been previously. The City’s main server is also five years old and at its capacity, with Technology Coordinator Anne Davis having to clear up free space on it on a weekly basis so City staff can work off of it. We have been working with our technology consultant to acquire quotes on a new server and we have also received quotes on re-cabling City Hall, including adding some new drops. The total cost for all of these tech needs is just under $50,000 and we appear to be able to do it with existing funds. Regardless, we will be in front of the Council at your meeting on
August 11th to provide you with a further update on this important issue.
- A reminder that the Gardiner Police Department will be hosting a National Night Out on Tuesday, August 3 from 6-8 p.m. on the Gardiner Common. I invite members of the council and public to attend this free event where you can meet members of the PD, see K-9 and bomb robot demonstrations, and participate in a vehicle rollover simulator. There will be a bouncy castle and face painting for the kids and free food for all! For more information, please call 582-5150.
- Next Saturday, August 7th downtown Gardiner will come alive with the Go Go Gardiner Car Show and Sock Hop.~ Starting at 5:30pm, Water Street will be lined with classic and custom cars and trucks for people to view and admire.~ All are welcome to join in the fun and to judge their favorite for the people's choice award and if you have an automobile for display feel free to bring it down for the festivities.~ At 6pm the R&B Dance Studio will lead a sock hop in the middle of Water Street in which everyone can participate while enjoying music in Johnson Hall Mini Park.~ Going along with the festive nature of the event, there will be games and events happening at McKay Park, located on Water Street.~ For questions and more info call Gardiner Main Street at 582-3100 or email info@gardinermainstreet.org.
- On Monday, Nomination Papers will be available in the City Clerk's office. The offices of Mayor, three City Council At-Large seats and two MSAD11 Board Members are available. Papers are due back to the City Clerk by the close of business September 13, 2010. The election will be held November 2, 2010.
As always, I appreciate the opportunity to serve the people of Gardiner as City Manager.
