WEEKLY MEMORANDUM

TO:             Mayor MacLean, Members of the City Council, and Department Heads
FROM:     Scott Morelli, City Manager
DATE:     September 24, 2010
RE:             Weekly Memo

UPCOMING MEETINGS
Next Week's City Meetings are available on our Calendar

Below please find an update on recent City activities:

  • Attached please find the August finance report.
  • Members of the Wastewater Advisory Board, along with Councilor Liberatore, two other West Street residents, Chuck Applebee, and I interviewed three different firms this week and heard their presentations on how they would study and address the sewer odors problems in the West Street area.  We have selected who we believe to be the firm with the best proposal/presentation and will be making a recommendation to the City Council at your next meeting on October 13, 2010.
  • The City has recently found more ways to save money.  Due to improvements in our three year loss history, our Worker’s Compensation budget will see a savings of $18,000.  In addition, thanks to the assistance of the Maine Municipal Bond Bank, the City qualifies for the Build America Bonds to finance the new ladder truck.  As such, our debt service payments each year will be significantly less!  Some of the savings from these line items will need to be put towards software licensing costs for our new server, improved internet speed, and other insurance costs.  However, the City still expects to see a savings and we will continue to look for other ways we can make the most efficient use of taxpayer dollars.
  • Recently Fire Chief Rick Cody created three new Lieutenant positions within the Fire Department.  These positions will replace the three Senior Private positions.  After an interview process, Chief Cody has selected Rich Kindelan, Marcel DeForge, and Patrick Saucier to serve as the new lieutenants.  Congratulations to each!
As always, I appreciate the opportunity to serve the people of Gardiner as City Manager.
