New England Water Environment Association
As an officer in the Maine Wastewater Control Association, Chuck Applebee recently attended the New England Water Environment Association conference in Boston and found some of the same issues of importance regionally and federally as locally. Some strong messages regarding the need for a proactive management approach were delivered around the theme "Energy Alternatives: The Future is Now" and by Water Environment Federation President Mohamed Dahab. Dahab emphasized that the artificial division between water and wastewater utilities leads to duplicity, inefficiencies and a weak ability to impact the formulation of policy from the local to federal levels. This is certainly an area we have spent plenty of time discussing locally. Gardiner became one of fifty-four organizations statewide to join the Governor’s Carbon Challenge, and participate in a program to reduce carbon emissions to pre-1990 levels by 2010. Apparently both messages ring with a familiar chime in Gardiner.
