Public Works
We are moving toward outfitting the oldest truck in the fleet for storm drain basin cleaning duty. We retained a truck as its replacement came on line (we normally auction such surplus and realize very little proceeds due to the very heavy use of these trucks) to address this vitally important maintenance item. To protect the investment in our storm drainage system over time, routine cleaning is very important and the City has never been able to address this systematically. This spring we will start a permanent program of basin cleaning that has no significant additional cost and but yeilds extraordinary benefit in terms of protecting the infrastructure and avoiding costly emergency situations.
Organizational Task Force
This group has become noted for its lively, insightful discussion. At the last meeting we heard a report from the City’s technology committee regarding the current status of technology and the dramatic increases in customer service and organizational capacity that an upgrade would yield. The discussion continued with a segment on organizational change by David Barrett of MMA and Dave Clark, Director of Production at Bath Iron Works. The next meeting will focus on services and opportunities for efficiencies by higher levels of cooperation among public sector service providers (schools, city, water etc).
