Gardiner Community Celebration
We all enjoyed a really wonderful evening with the Governor and many other officials at the Train Station Thursday night. It is quite a comment on Gardiner’s reputation that such a group would come to help us celebrate. We had at least 175 people attend including ten state officials and received checks totaling $6,116,000. However, the real story is the incredible talent and dedication of our team that aspires to, and achieves such successes! Congratulations to the City’s team!

Thanks to Ingrid who graciously invited us to use the former Boys and Girls Club (we are still bound by the lease until April) when interest in the event far outstripped the capacity of Johnson Hall.

Water District/City Cooperation
On Monday March 22 the Water District/City Joint Management Team will review the KVCOG/MRWA (Maine Rural Water Association) draft Management Evaluation study. This is an initial review of the draft for discussion by the Joint Management Team. We will work toward refining the study report quickly so that it can be presented to a joint Trustee/City Council meeting in the near future. Brian Kent is also nearing completion of his One Roof/Super Site study. I expect within the next week or two we will repeat with Brian Kent the same review steps we are currently pursuing with the Management Evaluation.

City Staff
Shirar Wilder will start as Community Development Associate on Monday. Shirar comes to us with a Masters in Public Administration and great enthusiasm for municipal government and public service. She has primary responsibility for implementing the City’s Housing Action Plan including the $1.3 million rehabilitation project, and assisting Jeff Hinderliter. Code enforcement and policy initiatives in the Zoning/Planning areas were big implementation items in the Housing Action Plan. Please say “hi” to Shirar when you see her.

Recreation
It was very unfortunate that a fifth grader in the after school program at the Boys and Girls Club was injured and airlifted to Maine Medical Center on Thursday afternoon. The injury was in the normal course of activities, staff responded in a timely and appropriate fashion, and tests ultimately showed a concussion as the only injury. Although we hope that everyone stays 100% well and healthy, it is reassuring to know that the student was given expert care by City recreation and ambulance staff, and the ultimate outcome was an injury of a short-term nature.
