Spring Clean Up
Those of us in the business of municipal services and policy-making deal regularly with important issues that have major impact on the lives of residents. But few activities draw more interest than our biannual Spring Clean Up. May 3 kicks it off in District 1 and on May 28 we wrap it up in District 4. The permit fee remains at $15 and permits are available at the front office April 12.
This year we have made arrangements to collect some universal waste. In 2002 we did not pick up any universal waste at all. We recognize this is a hardship for many residents and Pat Gilbert has worked hard to accommodate this need in 2004. For an additional ten-dollar Hatch Hill disposal fee (per item) we can take computer components or TVs. As a “value-added” element of clean up this year we have teamed the Code Office with the Public Works department to identify and work to eliminate junk on particular properties that need to be cleaned up, but might not otherwise participate. Full details of clean up procedures are available at the Public Works page at gardinermaine.com , in this packet or 582-4408.
West Street
We have identified a wastewater odor problem in the West Street area. Chuck Applebee’s memo in the packet details efforts to neutralize the chemical imbalance that is likely causing the problem. Like most such problems there will be some trial and error as we fine-tune a solution, but Chuck Applebee and Pat Gilbert are working toward a permanent fix as quickly as possible. Although the City is taking all necessary measures with our system, we may identify homeowner deficiencies to be corrected that contribute to the problem as well.
