RE: Weekly Memo
Meetings for the Week of April 18, 2005
Historic Preservation Tues., April 19, 6:00 pm. City Hall
Library
An exciting new phase of renovations is taking shape at the Library. The historic stained glass window high on the Water Street face will be refurbished. Anne Davis reports that a combination of funds from the Gardiner Library Association, New Century grant program, “Gardiner Reflections” proceeds and the “virtual window” fundraiser has yielded the $33,000 estimated to refurbish the window. In October the window is slated for removal. Several months of work by a craftsperson will be needed to restore the window, with reinstallation likely in spring 2006. Although fundraising continues, planned as concurrent with the stained glass window restoration is the refurbishment of the ten regular windows in the Children’s Room which have deteriorated to the point of causing significant energy loss. After tightening
up the building and replacing the heating/ventilation systems, finally the spectacular vaulted ceiling in the Children’s Room can be exposed by removal of the suspended ceiling. Now that is an exciting and ambitious long-term plan!
Council Schedule
The next Council meeting will be the regular May meeting on May 5th. As the FY 06 Budget will be distributed in that Council packet, we will jump right into budget workshops after the May 5th meeting. We normally will conduct weekly budget workshops for the months May and June. I will include a workshop schedule when we distribute the budget.
