RE: Weekly Memo
Meetings for the Week of July 24, 2006
Council Meeting. Weds., July 26, 7:00 pm, City Hall.
Technology Plan
We recently had an initial “scoping” meeting with the software vendor, Unifund, and our local tech team of Anne Davis, Dee Berglund, Chuck Applebee, IT consultant Dan Couvrette and myself. Out of that pre-installation meeting we are working to refine an implementation plan. Currently, network costs are in the final stages of refinement after some eight months of research, study and discussion. We expect to place hardware and software orders associated with the network within the next several weeks and build the network in August and early September. Unifund could then install their product in late September, yielding an October 1 software project start date. The entire software project is expected to span up to eighteen months. It is likely we will finish the integrated software project and transition into the
conversion of the assessing software in association with the revaluation. In 2008 we should finally be able to focus our full attention upon fully utilizing the potential of our technology upgrades. This is a complex and long-term initiative likely to occupy City staff for years.
Public Works
We recently bid our paving work for FY 07 and are breathing a little easier. Paving costs have become extremely volatile and recent bids have been surprising to some. Our low bid was in line with our estimate - $51/ton. Other recent bids have been as high as $81/ton. Last year we used an estimated $32/ton as a basis for projections and paid $45/ton. This is certainly a time when projecting some of the most basic expenses associated with our services (energy, materials, consumables) is very challenging.
