We had a Department of Labor workplace safety inspection last week and did very well. This was an unannounced inspection that lasted the whole day and visited the plant and the Maine Avenue and South Gardiner pump stations under the direct control of the plant personnel. If you will recall several years ago we voluntarily entered into a program with the Department of Labor to identify and correct workplace safety concerns in the wastewater operations. That voluntary process identified some seventy items that had developed over the previous twenty years of plant operations. It is a real credit to Chuck and whole wastewater team that they voluntarily entered into such a program and that they set about to address the whole list of items. This unannounced inspection was a follow up to the conclusion several months ago of that voluntary program. About twenty items were identified; half of them are policy matters that are easily corrected and none of the remaining operations/facility items are serious or difficult to correct. The really outstanding circumstance is the fact that the plant is currently as much construction site
as wastewater plant, with three separate contractors on site with as many as twenty contractual personnel present. The wastewater crew makes workplace safety a priority – the results show it!
