Downtown Sidewalks Committee

Walking Tour of Downtown

Monday, October 16, 2023

Present: Gay Grant, Clare Marron, Dorothy Washburne, Tamara Whitmore, Melissa Lindley, Greg Stevens, Tucker Fitzmaurice, Dakota Hewlit

Notes & Observations:

  • Buildings need larger diameter water pipes for installing sprinklers. Can that be included as part of the construction phase?
  • Need to define limits of the sidewalk where it leads into Dearborn Park. Cannot include the entire park as part of the sidewalk replacement project
  • Can we achieve universal access into buildings – some have steps up to enter
  • Lamp posts can be placed closer to the curb to maximize sidewalk widths
  • End project on Church Street at Mechanic Street. Include crosswalk near city hall across Church, and another curb between Domino’s entrance and parking lot.
  • Current issue at the Domino’s corner: There is no level, flat surface, so when it is icy/slick you slide into the street
  • Add a crosswalk from CNB to Renys at the narrow point in front of CNB? Hydrant is across the street. Add a bump out?
  • End project at entrance to Renys parking lot entrance and at Steamboat lane
  • Try to preserve/retain tree in front of Bintliffs/Bateau
  • Plowing between hydrant and Renys entrance is a tight fit.
  • End project at 9 Maine Ave, at rear alleyway entrance
  • End point on the Depot side of street?
  • Where is a safe crossing location for Depot/Waterfront?
  • How many lamp posts are needed? Lights are brighter now with LED bulbs. At current height they shine into 2nd floor windows.
  • Some parking spaces may be lost due to distance from crosswalk
  • End point  - at post office and 347 Water Street Corners
  • Sidewalk around the Key Bank/JM Arbor corner not included?
