Storm Watch - Significant Rainfall & Flood Watch

Update for March 6, 2024

Flood Watch tonight through Thursday: Widespread rainfall and interior snowmelt expected.

Steady rainfall is expected with the system tonight into Thursday. The combination of frozen grounds and soils saturated following recent rainfall, flooding is possible from this system with a widespread 1.5 to 2 inches of rainfall expected, with locally higher amounts. Additionally, snowmelt across interior locations will add additional runoff to area streams and rivers.

Flooding caused by excessive rainfall is possible. Excessive runoff may result in flooding of rivers, creeks, streams, and other low-lying and flood-prone locations. Creeks and streams may rise out of their banks.

A complex storm system later this weekend could cause additional river rises and renewed flood concerns.

Overview for the March 6-7 storm:

  • Minor flooding possible as moderate to heavy rain moves in tonight and tomorrow
  • Widespread amounts of 1-2” with the potential for higher amounts along the coast
  • The heaviest rain will fall in the south, however the extra contribution of snowmelt will expand the flood threat into the White Mountains and Maine Lakes Region

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS

  • Monitor the latest forecast and be alert for possible Flood Warnings.
  • Those living in areas prone to flooding should be prepared to take action should flooding develop.

Another system approaches the area Sunday into Monday. Uncertainty, especially with respect to precipitation type, is high through the coast and interior. Snowy solutions would likely produce travel impacts whereas rainy solutions would likely produce some flooding issues. Combinations of these two scenarios are possible as well.
